WAECAccording to the West Africa Examination Council, more than 84 per cent of the students who took the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates in Nigeria achieved at least five subjects with credit or higher.
This was revealed by Mr Patrick Areghan, the Head of Nigeria Office, at a press conference on Monday, where he announced the release of the 2023 WASSCE results.
He said that out of the 1,613,733 students who participated in the examination, 1,361,608 students, which is 84.38%, passed at least five subjects with or without English Language and/ or Mathematics.
He also said that 79.81% of the students passed at least five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
Furthermore he said that out of the 1,287,920 students who met this criterion, 616,914 (47.9%) were male and 671,006 (52.1%) were female.
He compared the performance of the students with the previous year, saying that “The percentage of candidates in this category in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2022, that is, those who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, was 76.36%.
Thus, there is a 3.45% decrease in performance in this regard.
”He also disclosed that the results of 262,803 students, which is 16.29% of the total number of candidates, were withheld due to various cases of examination malpractice reported.
