Education faculties will no longer admit low performers in UTME — Deans
Committee of Deans of Education in Nigerian Universities (CODENU) has stated that faculties of Education in Nigerian universities will no longer accommodate candidates with low grades in both UTME and post-UTME examinations for any course.
The committee made the decision at the just concluded two-day summit held at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The summit with the theme ‘Educational challenges and intervention,’ was meant to address some challenges confronting the Nigerian education sector.
Deliberations at the summit focused on the way forward for Nigerian education system especially at the tertiary level with eminent scholars and educationists drawn from universities and educational agencies.
These were led by Emeritus Professor Pai Obanya.
At the end of deliberations on the way forward for the Nigerian education system, it was resolved that the conventional practice whereby Faculties of Education in universities are required to admit candidates who do not meet cut-off points for admission into other faculties should be discouraged.
This was contained in a communiqué issued and signed by the national president of the committee, Professor J. A Ademokoya, in a bid to establish the position of the committee on the ongoing reform of the Faculty of Education.
The committee maintained that the “Faculty ofEducation should not be made a dumping ground by admitting students who have no interest in the teaching profession, thereby lowering the standards of teachers’ education in the country.”
The communiqué also added that posting of corps members who are not graduates of education courses to teach during their National Youth Service Corps was unethical and should be discouraged.
“It high time Faculty of Education be adequately funded for academic and research development programmes, as the establishment of special postgraduate diploma in education for lecturers to improve their teaching and learning capacities cannot be overemphasised,” the communiqué revealed.

This is a very beautiful development as it will increase the competence of the teachers and exclude the uninterested minds from the profession.
