NUC directs varsities to beef up security against protest 

Amidst rising concerns over economic challenges and their impact on the populace, the Federal Government has issued a directive to universities nationwide to enhance security measures on their campuses. This precautionary measure comes ahead of anticipated nationwide protests organised by youth groups, which are expected to be a response to the growing economic hardship in the country. In a formal communication, Chris Maiyaki, the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), conveyed the directive on behalf of the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman. The letter, addressed to the Vice Chancellors of all Nigerian universities, emphasised the need for heightened vigilance and proactive security measures to safeguard the university environment, its properties, and staff.

The letter stated, “The Honourable Minister of Education has directed that the attention of Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian Universities be formally drawn to the plan by unknown groups to embark on nationwide protests.

The Federal Government is not unaware of the right of any Nigerian to peaceful protest, but is concerned about the safety of staff, students, and university property should there be any protest action. ”Highlighting the government’s concern for the safety and well-being of the university community, the Minister urged the Vice Chancellors to take necessary steps to prevent any potential disruption. This includes issuing specific statements to reassure staff and students of their safety and encouraging students to remain on campus to focus on their academic pursuits.
