Information reaching us now has it that the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN ASUU would also go on strike immediately strike begins.
A reliable source told us that a meeting was held in the University yesterday concerning the issue. Some set of academic staff has threatened that they will kick-start the strike immediately Federal Government fails to pay their salaries on or before 31st of January 2020.
Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities yesterday fumed over the recent directive by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to stop the January salary of lecturers who failed to enrol on the Integrated Personal Payroll Institution System. Speaking to Daily Trust on the telephone, ASUU President Prof. Abiodun Ogunyemi said the Federal Government should be ready to take full responsibility for an industrial crisis.
He described the directive to stop salaries of tertiary institutions’ lecturers as provocative. Abiodun said: “This circular is highly provocative, we condemn it, we reject it. “It appears some individuals in government are trying to sabotage the process and they do not want us to present our alternative to IPPIS and we believe what we’re doing is in the best interest of the Nigerian University system”.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun the mobilisation of its members ahead of planned strike action across the country.
