Cross River begins trial reopening of schools

OFFICIALS of the Ministry of Education in Cross River State on Tuesday supervised the phased trial resumption of schools in the state which were shut in March in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The trial took place simultaneously in three public schools in the three senatorial districts of the state.

The schools are West African People’s Institute, Calabar, in the Southern Senatorial District; Government Secondary School, Ikom, in the Central Senatorial District; and Government Secondary School, Igoli in the Northern Senatorial District.

During the resumption of WAPI, only Senior Secondary School 1-3 students were in school with their face masks and face shields.

They (students) were told on the assembly ground by their principal, Mrs. Mercy Etim, to go home and wait for further information on when they would return to school.

State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Godwin Amanke, was also at WAPI and it was gathered that in the next phase, the school would be decontaminated before the students and teachers would resume.

One of the students, who spoke with our correspondent after they were asked to go home, said, “I am not happy that we are going to stay at home again. I thought we were going to resume fully. It has been very boring staying at home for so long.”
