The non-teaching staff of the Federal University of Technology Owerri on Monday resumed work amidst the growing concerns over the continued spread of COVID-19 in the country. This came as the federal government is yet to lift restrictions placed on resumption of schools during the coronavirus pandemic. Also, in a recent circular issued by the head of service of the federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, all federal government ministries, agencies and institutions were reminded that the directive on the strict compliance of COVID-19 protocols were still in force. The HoS had insisted that only officer on GL-14 and above and officers performing essential services were to report for duty and that as much as possible, other categories of officers should be encouraged to work from home. However, in a resumption order contained in an internal memorandum, signed by the registrar of the university, J. U. Nnabuihe on July 20, 2020, the university management directed all non-teaching staff to resume work immediately. The memo with reference number, FUT/REG/CR//GEN/1A/VOL.4 is titled, ‘Resumption of work following ease of COVID-19 lockdown’ and addressed to all non-teaching staff of the universityAccording to the memo, “The university management has observed that several weeks after the federal government has directed resumption of duties after the COVID-19 lockdown, many non-teaching staff are yet to resume duties.“Management has thus directed that all non-teaching staff must resume duties immediately.“However, heads of departments and coordinators are to arrange the functions and offices in such a way as to avoid overcrowding in offices and maintain social distancing.”
