A group of National Youth Service Corps members has appealed to President Bola Tinubu for an increase in the allowances provided to corps members serving across Nigeria’s 36 states. Expressing their plight, they highlighted the necessity to take up additional jobs due to the escalating cost of living, rendering the current monthly allowance of N33,000 insufficient.
In an open letter addressed to the President, the corps members, represented by the Concerned Corps Members, emphasized their indispensable role in various sectors contributing to national development. They underscored the challenges posed by soaring commodity prices, which have forced many to resort to extreme measures for survival, including fetching water from streams and rendering services in exchange for food.Additionally, they urged the NYSC authority to address unfavorable work conditions faced by some corps members at their primary assignments.
In response, the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, assured that the concerns would be considered, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing the plight of the masses, including corps members, amidst nationwide inflation.
Megwa reiterated the government’s stance as youth-friendly and hinted at potential revisions to corps members’ allowances in line with broader civil service wage reviews.
