Nigerian Institute of Journalism Admission into HND, ND, PGD and Certificate Programme for 2020/2021 

Applications are invited for admission into the various full-time and part-time programmes of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism [NIJ] for the 2020/2021 academic session.

Online Application for Admission for the 2020/2021 Academic Session is now OPEN.

Available Programmes

National Diploma (ND) – Mass Communication [Full Time & Part-Time]
Higher National Diploma (HND) – Mass Communication [Full Time & Part-Time]
Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) – Broadcast Journalism [Full Time & Part-Time], Print Journalism [Full Time & Part-Time], Public Relations/Advertising [Full Time & Part-Time]
Proficiency Certificate – Photo Journalism, Communication & Writing Skills, Basic Photography, Sports Report and Presentation.
Admission Requirements

  1. National Diploma (ND)

Five Credit passes in the WAEC or NECO Senior Secondary Certificate Examination or its equivalent in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
Students’ enrolment and admission is through (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
At the end of the course, successful candidates are awarded National Diploma.

  1. Higher National Diploma (HND)

Five Credit pass as it is for admission into National Diploma
National Diploma in Mass Communication with minimum of Lower Credit from a recognised and NBTE-accredited institution.
Evidence/Proof of a one-year mandatory Industrial Attachment.
Admission is done directly by the Institution.
At the end of the course, successful candidates are awarded Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication.

  1. Post Graduate Diploma (PGD)

The programme is separated into three specialised areas of Mass Communication:

Print Journalism,
Broadcast Journalism,
Public Relations and Advertising.
The programme is designed to expose and equip the students with the fundamental principles and theoretical framework of Mass Communication practice.

Every student in all sequences apart from their professional courses, take these core courses:

Foundation of Mass Communication,
Theory of Mass Communication,
Mass Media Law and Ethics,
Mass Communication Research Methods;
Communication for Development, Media Management and
Topical Issues in Mass Communication.

  1. You must pass the following subject(s) in O’Level obtained at not more than 2 sittings
  • Credit pass in Mathematics
  • Credit pass in English Language
    and at least credit pass in 3 others subjects
  1. First Degree or Higher National Diploma from a recognized institution.
  2. Proficiency Certificate
  3. You must pass the following subject(s) in O’Level obtained at not more than 2 sitting
  • Credit pass in Mathematics
  • Credit pass in English Language
    and at least credit pass in 3 others subjects

Duration

a. National Diploma (ND)

The programme is of four semesters (Two Academic Sessions) duration for Full Time students and Six Semester (Three Academic Sessions) for Part Time students.

b. Higher National Diploma (HND)

The programme is Four-Semester (Two Academic Sessions) for Full Time students and Six Semesters (Three Academic Sessions) for Part Time students.

c. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)

The programme is of Two semester (One Academic Session) duration for Full Time and Three semester for Part Time students.

Internship

At the end of each Semester and session, National Diploma and Higher National Diploma students are sent on 4-6 weeks Internship with Media organisations for practical experience prior to their graduation. At the completion of their programmes, National Diploma students go on one year compulsory Industrial Attachment (Internship) while Post- Graduate students are sent on a 6-week Internship programme at the completion of their course work.

Deferment of Admission

All candidates already offered admission may apply for deferment of admission for that session through the head of relevant department to the Registrar within six weeks of date of admission. The application must be supported with genuine reasons as well as documentary evidence where necessary.
