THE VICE-CHANCELLOR’S ADDRESS TO STUDENTS ON THE TRANSITION TO VIRTUAL TEACHING PLATFORMS

My Dear UNIOSUN Students,

Sincere greetings!

As the world is responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic and adapting to its impacts, I sincerely hope you are well, staying safe and maintaining good hygiene at home.

Due to the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria and the restrictions on gatherings, I write to share with you our plans to commence academic activities by resuming classes online; this implies that we will be moving all of our face-to-face courses to a virtual format. The effective date would soon be communicated to you.

Please note that several efforts have been put into this transition in the past couple of weeks. Lecturers have gone through series of trainings and are now ready to start engaging you through efficient, reliable, cost-effective and user-friendly online teaching/learning platforms. It would interest you to know that lecturers are working hard to adapt their course materials to this new environment for excellent lecture delivery.

Two major tools would be utilized for online instructions for now and they are the Google Class, which is a simple and resourceful learning management system and the Google Meet, which is a video conferencing software that has been employed for engaging students for interactive teaching/learning sessions.

Please be rest assured that we are committed to making this a smooth transition for you and our personnel from the Information Management Technology Centre (IMTC) would be on standby to provide support and offer additional information and resources to guide. It is also important to visit the University website (www.uniosun.edu.ng) regularly for notices and updates.

We are not unmindful of the likely challenges that this imminent transition will bring to bear to all stakeholders, particularly, you my dear children. However, we have little or no choice other than to adapt to this existential reality. We will work together to ease whatever challenges emerge as we move on.

Wherever you are, please continue to adhere to government’s instructions on curbing the spread of COVID-19. Protect your health and the safety of everyone around you by practicing social distancing and healthy habits. Remember always that you are ambassadors of this institution and your conduct must be satisfactory at all times.

Finally, as we all adjust to a new reality, please be rest assured that you are not alone as we are here for you and this scourge will surely pass. We are also excited to try new things even as we explore the virtual environment for meetings, teachings and learning. Kindly join the move and don’t be left behind. Remain committed to your studies and stay safe always.

Best wishes for the remaining part of this academic year and always.
